Church planting legend Don Overstreet, who had a hand in launching more than 500 churches worldwide, many of which were in the Los Angeles area, went to be with Jesus Friday evening.
“My father is at rest in the arms of his savior. He went in peace at 11:22pm Dec 8, 2017,” wrote Overstreet’s son, Kirk, in a Facebook post overnight early Saturday. Kirk Overstreet told TogetherLA.net that his dad, 70, suffered a massive heart attack earlier in the week and then a stroke causing damage to his brain.
“He loved everyone no matter what and believed in the ones most didn’t — Jesus style,” his son said of his father, whose more than 50 years experience in church planting helped him share with countless church leaders in person and in his book, Sent Out.
“Today we say goodbye to a legend, a hero, and a General in the Kingdom! This man exemplified godliness and leadership! His legacy lives on in his disciples,” tweeted lead pastor Kris Brossett of Refuge LA. “Countless churches have been planted and leaders made! RIP Don Overstreet! I’m honored to have had you in my corner!”

Friends and family began flooding social media with comments of love and respect shortly after the news came.
“Early this morning, Don Overstreet went to be with Jesus,” posted Bob Carlton, a pastor at Ridge Point Community Church in Michigan. “Don was a hero, a friend, a mentor and so much more to me and SO many others around the world. He was one of the most apostolic church planters I’ve ever known. He ‘left it all on the field’ and then some. His legacy is the people that he shared Jesus with and the churches he planted to tell even more people about Jesus. His family is a testimony of his leadership and what God can do with the heart of a man.
“I bet he is dancing, singing, praising, and high five-ing with all the other saints around the Throne. I can practically hear the ‘come on!’ from here. I can only imagine the eruption when Don showed up to the party in heaven… because almost EVERYONE there knows his name and has been waiting to see him.
Well done my friend.. Well done.”
“The comments, calls, visits, and texts showed us his love,” Kirk posted. “Thank you. We will have a party and will let everyone know the time and place. Pray for us as we mourn but not like the world.”
