Originally part of Rancho Los Feliz, East Hollywood began developing rapidly in the early 1900s as Los Angeles expanded.The arrival of the Red Car streetcar system connected the neighborhood to downtown and Hollywood, encouraging residential growth.
Following World War II, East Hollywood became home to successive waves of immigrants from Latin America, Armenia, Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and other nations, creating one of the most multicultural neighborhoods in Southern California.
