History

A brief history

Long Beach has a rich history that stretches back thousands of years.

The area was originally home to the Tongva people, including the sacred village site of Puvunga,
an important cultural and spiritual landmark.

Founded as Willmore City in 1882, Long Beach experienced rapid growth following the discovery
of oil in 1921, transforming it into one of Southern California’s major economic centers.

After the devastating 1933 Long Beach earthquake (6.4 magnitude), much of the city was rebuilt in
the distinctive Art Deco style still seen today. The disaster also inspired California’s Field Act, which
established stricter safety standards for public school construction across the state.

Today, Long Beach continues to honor its history while embracing innovation and growth.
